NASA’s Spot the Station

Did you know that you can spot the Space Station from your backyard?  In fact, its the third brightest light in the sky. Now, NASA is enabling you to get an email or an SMTP text message sent to your cell phone at the time when you are able to see the Space Station. Several times per week, NASA’s Mission Control in Houston will notify you when the Space Station is able to be seen.  The Space Station is 200 miles above the earth and looks like a fast moving airplane. Kind of like a UFO. No word if NASA is including a mobile coupon for TANG. Sign up...

Anti-Obama Spam Texts Linked to Virginia Candidate

Thousands of people in the Washington, DC area are being inundated with unauthorized spam text messages to their mobile phones.  And, the ironic thing about it is that they are being linked to a Virginia state senator candidate Jason Flannery who is also the CEO of ccAdvertising.  (We won’t help Flannery’s business by giving it a link, but here’s the proof of his involvement.) The texts are apparently coming form a variety of unknown web domains, including republicanett.com, votegopett.com, aiccomett.com and informedett.com.  Who Is shows that Flannery is the owner of one of those URL’s and GoDaddy has sinced suspended the violating URL’s for spam. Spam text messages should be illegal, shouldn’t they?  Well, unfortunately, they probably aren’t subject to the $16,000 per incident fine that the FCC has imposed.  That’s because this particular firm, cc Advertising, is apparently taking advantage of a loophole in the law that permits it to send unauthorized non opt-in text messages via email to cell phone. It’s amazing to me that the carriers even support the email to text message protocol.  It simply doesn’t make any sense and it allows businesses and consumers (and unscrupulous politicians) to circumvent the law’s intentions.  Moreover, the carriers don’t make any money from it as they would if the perpetrators sent a text message from a short code like companies like 84444.com provide. The Text Message Blog provides a list of domains here that allow you to send an email to a cell phone. Maybe that’s where Flannery got his...

Don’t Text and Fly

We’ve all heard the warnings: “Don’t Text and Drive.” And, no matter how much we warn people, they continue to do it. But, I never thought that we needed to educate pilots on not to Text and Fly.  Apparently, however, we do. A Jetstar plane from Australia nearly landed without its landing gear being down, according to this story by Ubergizmo.  The pilot apparently was reading text messages and when the plane got within 150 meters of landing, the co-pilot (who was not texting at the time), pulled the plane up after an alarm sounded notifying the pilot of the missing landing...
