Premium MMS

While attending the Search Engine Strategies Show in Chicago in December, I purchased a book called “Mobile Marketing” by Alex Michael and Ben Salter. The book was informative, but having been published in 2006, it was somewhat outdated.  It did, however, give me a good overview of what the marketplace looked like five years ago, especially the marketplace in Europe. One interesting fact from page 33 of the book is that “premium MMS is offered in Belgium, Poland, Switzerland, and the Scandinavian countries.” Advanced Telecom Services has been offering premium SMS for many years, but premium MMS is not an option in the North American...

More Celebs Join Haiti Text Message Cause

Morgan Freeman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tim McGraw, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and Reese Witherspoon join the Ad Council and American Red Cross to launch this public service announcement to Support Victims of the Earthquake in Haiti. Americans have poured over $30 million into a text message donation program for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.  It is, by far, the single biggest use of text message premium SMS for non-profit organizations. Moreover, President Obama has now signed a bill that was unanimously approved in the House and Senate to provide tax relief in 2009 for all text message donations to Haiti made by Americans in 2010....

Relief for Haiti Via Text Message

The earthquake in Haiti has made Americans familiar with a country that is so close geographically, yet so far, from the American way of life. Tonight, during the premiere of 24 season eight on Fox, a text message took a prominent spot in the show when First Lady Michelle Obama announced the Red Cross Haiti relief premium SMS program.  Viewers were asked to Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross for relief for earthquake-stricken Haiti. As of Friday, this text message donation program has caught the fancy of the American public looking for a quick and easy way to donate money to the cause in Haiti.  Over $10 million has been donated to the Red Cross program for Haiti. Normally, premium SMS takes 90 days for the premium SMS service bureau to obtain the funds.  Given the dire situation in Haiti, however, this is not ideal.  Verizon is making the money available immediately to the Red Cross, essentially pre-paying before the funds have been billed and received by the carrier.  Sprint is giving 80% of the money it has raised thus far, perhaps waiting for potential chargebacks that may be associated with this program.  AT&T, which has raised the most money thus far, is also considering ways that it can make the funds available sooner.
